Hollywood - it's not the 1990s, we need new stars

Peter Bradshaw wrote an interesting article in the The Guardian today. He argues that in today's digital media climate, the power of Hollywood A-List celebrities to successfully draw big box office returns is on the wane.

He primarily cites the recent flop of Larry Crowne, which stars Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts as evidence of this trend. I think this is where his argument fails.

Who. Greenlit. This. Piece. of. Shit.

Most of the "A List" stars he quotes: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise and Bruce Willis are now middle-aged, so it's to be expected that they don't draw crowds like they did in their 1990s superstar heydays. In fact, that's another thing wrong with Hollywood. They love flogging a dead horse. Whether it's a tired old formulaic movie or continually pushing a star clearly past their due by date onto the increasingly bored audience. Tom Cruise is now 50 years old and they're still getting him to do things like Mission Impossible? I'd like to see Tom perform a complex, challenging role worthy of an actor of his caliber.

It pains me to see the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler still being championed as the leads in a romantic comedy (or any "comedy" for that matter, anymore). It's time to step aside, retire in your mansion and let other people have a turn. You guys may have had and will continue to receive copious amounts of plastic surgery, but we all know how old you are in real life.

Audiences are sick of the same old people (and pretty much, the same looking, whitebread people) who have infested our screens.

We need new stars!
